Extractions are a routine occurrence in pediatric dentistry. We’ve all heard stories about wisdom teeth, but sometimes there are other reasons teeth need to be pulled – for example, sometimes braces can be avoided by extracting certain teeth to allow shifting to happen naturally. Whatever the reason, Caring Tree Children’s Dentistry performs routine extractions on a regular basis.
A pulpotomy is also known as a “baby [tooth] root canal.” It is the preventive surgical removal of an inflamed pulp chamber inside a child’s tooth to inhibit further infection or abscess. Baby teeth are not as strong or durable as adult teeth, and nerves in baby teeth are closer to the outside. Because of these factors, children who still have primary teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay and pain.
Pulpotomy is a measure taken to keep the pulp inside the tooth alive if there appears to be enough healthy tissue present in the “pulp space” of the tooth where nerves, blood vessels, and pink connective tissues dwell. A special medicated filling can be put into the chamber for even more protection. Sometimes a crown is placed over the tooth following a pulpotomy to keep food particles and bacteria at bay.
